Think of the chillin'...

The neo-cons want you to believe that a child should be raised by its biological parents. It's more than that, actually. They really want you to believe that any alternative, especially if it involves one or more gay persons, is unacceptable.

But let me borrow from Bill Cosby and ask:
Well, what if your parents are assholes?

Let me make this perfectly clear: the ability to ejaculate and conceive a child does NOT qualify you to be that child's parent. Do you know what makes a good parent? I'll tell you: an even temperament, the ability (and willingness) to love the child unconditionally, and the financial wherewithal to survive the experience. Anything beyond that is irrelevant.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of gay children out there who are homeless, living on the streets, often selling themselves to stay alive, all because their biological parents discovered their sexuality, couldn't accept it and THREW THEM AWAY! If you want to make a difference in a child's life, find these assholes and bitch-slap them.

Seriously, though, if you really want to make a difference, then make it easy for gay couples (or single parents) to foster or adopt these children. If you won't care for them, then let us do it.

Thank you, Mr. President...

Thank you for finally making a statement in support of marriage equality. It was truly an historic event.

That said, there's an expression that comes to mind: "Talk is cheap."

So, I have to ask, with all due respect: what do you plan to do now?

Bill Clinton promised to end discrimination in the military and allow members of the armed forces to serve openly. Instead, he gave us "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and we know how well that worked out. He always claimed to be an advocate for the LGBT community, but four years later, he gave us the "Defense of Marriage Act". Granted, some argue that the alternatives under consideration at the time would have been far worse, but still, we have to recognize the disparity between his words and his actions.

So, Mr. President, what actions do you plan to take?

I know you've signed federal hate crimes legislation that includes the LGBT community, and you've also helped to repeal DADT, but there's still so much to be done. If you're really serious about ending discrimination, here are some actions you should really consider:

  1. Repeal DOMA - this is a vile piece of legislation that allows states to violate the Constitution and makes a complete mockery of the basic tenants of freedom and equality upon which this country was founded
  2. Enact ENDA - a meaningful version, that is, that includes transgendered people and protects both gender identity as well as gender expression
  3. Encourage the courts to declare the LGBT community a suspect class and apply strict scrutiny to any relevant cases
  4. Work toward a constitutional amendment that guarantees the freedom and equality of all LGBT people
We can't change peoples' hearts and minds, so unfortunately prejudice and bigotry will be with us for a long, long time. Perhaps someday we will have evolved past those petty concerns, but in the mean time you have a lot of constituents who need your help and your protection. Will you have the courage to give it?

The Men with the Pink Triangle (reprise)

Okay, so I'm back, but perhaps only briefly...

I've got a question.

The only post that ever really got any attention was
this one about the torture of a young gay man, described so graphically in Heinz Heger's book, and after being absent for almost six years, I have to end my silence and ask "Why?"

Why that post, and none of the others? I did a search for the key words "the men with the pink triangle tickle", and I was more than a little surprised (flabbergasted, in fact) to discover that my post was the first hit listed, but I digress.

I've always wanted to ask the visitors to that post why.

Were you, like me, absolutely horrified by account? Horrified by the brutality? Horrified by the complete and utter lack of humanity that these men demonstrated?

Back then, I was right; you can't forget that, the horror of that, ever. You shouldn't, because as much as we'd like to think that, as a species, we've evolved beyond that -- beyond the capacity to perpetrate such a heinous crime, or even stand by and watch it happen -- but the ugly truth is that names like Matthew Shepard and Brandon Teena prove that we really haven't.

Their murderers may have been brought to justice, but names like Phillip Parker and Asher Brown remind us that prejudice and bigotry are still very much alive and just as dangerous and deadly as ever, and any time I drive past Hamilton Middle School, I'm reminded that they live here, practically in my own back yard.

Still, why are you here? Tell me: why is this important to you?

"Iris" -- Goo Goo Dolls

And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
When sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
And you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

(break and solo)

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Homophobic Rant

This article is just chock full of homophobic paranoia; referring to two bills which passed recently in the California State Senate, the author writes:
The first mandates the promotion of homosexuality in all public schools and prohibits any negative teaching about homosexuals or those of any non-traditional sexuality. The second creates special rights for those of any non-traditional sexuality, including freedom from "discrimination" (and with our judges, that could easily become any statement that is negative toward this group) by people who receive any money in any way from the state.
It "promotes homosexuality"? To Christian terrorists, like this fuck-head, anything that does not condemn and vilify homosexuality, promotes it. It creates "special rights"? Being protected from discrimination is a special right?

He thinks these bills are scary. I wonder if he's looked in the mirror recently.

He goes on to say:
This is a truly terrible bill. It would force California public schools to adopt textbooks which
  1. Must say nothing bad about homosexuals, bisexuals or transsexuals and
  2. Must promote the positive actions of homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals AND identify these people by their sexuality. This is to eliminate the "enforced invisibility that so many minority groups have gone through in terms of their contributions to California history," according to Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica (who is openly homosexual).
Promote the positive actions of homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals? You mean like:
  • Oscar Wilde
  • Michelangelo
  • Sir Ian McKellen
  • Rock Hudson
  • Walt Whitman
Then he says:
And this is as early as kindergarten. Elementary students do not need to know anything about adult sexuality. How are you going to explain that some people have sex with both sexes or have undergone sex change surgery to 5-year-olds?
Asshole. You don't teach 5-year-old kids about sexuality -- hetero or homo.

Children do, however, need to learn how people relate to each other. It's a simple fact of life -- whether or not you understand or accept it -- that some men love men and some women love women, and that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with how they use their genitals.

He continues:
This bill effectively creates special rights for one group of people. Potentially, this law could be used to prosecute anyone who receives public money in any form who says anything that is perceived to be "discrimination" by homosexuals. This could prevent anyone in California schools, not to mention other government jobs, from voicing dissent.
Here we go again with "special rights". What is it with these people?

Let me put this succinctly: Public school teachers -- in any state, not just California -- must not proselytize for the Christian faith or
catechize its dogma. Stick to the fucking curriculum.

Finally, he revels in his psychosis:
What is really scary is that we are on the verge of the effective illegalization of evangelical Christianity. This would be done simply by expanding the law from those who receive public money to all citizens of California. Christians would not be able to preach their faith without fear of prosecution. It is a sad state of affairs that California is a stone's throw away from totalitarian-style religious oppression. We must pray and do all we can to stop this from happening - and that starts with stopping these bills.
Sadly, you ranting fuck-head, you are protected by the First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
Unfortunately, our constitution gives you the right to be hateful -- it even give you the right to indoctrinate your children. It does NOT, however, give you the right to mandate that public school curriculums agree with your beliefs. Sorry. If you don't like it, then home-school your children or send them to private school.

Cardinal urges legal action against Da Vinci Code

In this article, Cardinal Francis Arinze, a Nigerian who was considered a candidate for pope last year, was quoted as saying:
Christians must not just sit back and say it is enough for us to forgive and to forget. Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others. This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected.
So, Christians demand respect, for themselves and their beliefs. Yet they vilify and demonize gays and lesbians for repudiating their church's hateful and bigoted teachings. Can you say hypocrite?

Let me quote your own dogma:
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
Gee, I always thought that Christians should try to be Christ-like. Yeah, like that's going to happen.

I'll tell you what, Franky-boy, if I were you, I wouldn't want your mythical Christ showing up right about now, because you and the rest of your fuck-head friends would be in deep shit.

Day of Silence vs. Truth

Each year, GLSEN promotes what it calls a "Day of Silence" as a way to draw attention to the bullying and harassment faced by LGBT students everywhere. Students observe a day of silence and carry a card that says:
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echos that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you going to do to end the silence?
The "Day of Truth" is promoted by the Christian terrorists of the Alliance Defence Fund. According to their website:
The Day of Truth was established to counter the promotion of the homosexual agenda and express an opposing viewpoint from a Christian perspective
Here we go again with the dreaded "homosexual agenda."

Students participating in the Day of Truth are encouraged to wear T-shirts and pass out cards with the following message:
I am speaking the Truth to break the silence.
Silence isn't freedom. It's a constraint.
Truth tolerates open discussion, because the Truth emerges when healthy discourse is allowed.
By proclaiming the Truth in love, hurts will be halted, hearts will be healed, and lives will be saved.
Truth? Open discussion? Oh puh-lease... don't make me laugh.

These fuck-heads are not interested in truth. They're certainly not interested in open discussions. They're passing out propaganda that promotes Christian dogma.

The "Day of Silence" is not pro-gay -- it's anti-hate. The "Day of Truth", on the other hand, is not about truth at all -- it's anti-gay. It's as simple as that.
