Clues

To avoid destruction, the crew of the Enterprise must forget ever having met a race of xenophobic isolationists and destroy all evidence of the encounter. They are successful, but only after repeated attempts.

Suppose, for a moment, that it was god instead of a race of isolationists. Further, suppose it was everyone on the entire planet, not just the crew of a spaceship. Granted, it's impossible, but I dare you to consider the scenario: if someone stopped the world, completely eliminated all references to god -- everywhere, including everyone's memories -- and then started the world back up again, what would happen? I mean, without the bible, how would people justify their hate?
