Gay Students Under Attack Nationwide

This article states:
Sexual orientation -- real or perceived -- was the second leading cause of bullying in schools, according to that online survey of 3,450 students between ages 13 and 18, which did not use a scientific sample.

Okay. We can debate about statistics -- but let's not. Whether or not the study was conducted in a rigorously scientific fashion, the situation it suggests is alarming.

The article also states:
Gay rights opponents say some schools and lawmakers have gone too far and actually are encouraging homosexuality among young people.
What the fuck? Encouraging homosexuality? It's a simple fact of life: you can't make a straight boy gay any more than you can make a gay boy straight.

Straight students explore their sexuality each and every day at school: they flirt, they hold hands walking through the halls and -- gasp -- they even kiss. Are educators and lawmakers encouraging these behaviors? No -- I think not. Providing a safe environment for gay students, then, isn't encouraging their behavior either, is it?
